Sleep aid? Can anyone reccomend a good over the counter sleep aid that really works if such a thing exsists.Im in the Uk and please dont say Vodka.

LostSoul replied: "Diphenhydramine is the main ingredient in most sleep aids. It is actually the same ingredient as Benadryl, which causes drowsiness as a side effect."

andy replied: "Try herbal sleeping tablets. I work nights and when i get home i take two of these about half an hour before i go to bed, ( just took two ) They work for me. Alternatively some other people at work take a spoon or two of Nightnurse, and they say that works well. Good Luck..."

skippy's mum replied: "Have you tried NYTOL. It is available at chemists without a prescription & it works. It might also help if you have a hot bath about 30 minutes before getting into bed.."

Frankie S replied: "Exercise is a good un. You could walk to the chemist two miles away, purchase nothing, and walk back."

go 24 replied: "well i have depression and i get times where i find it so difficult to go to sleep as i have things on my mind, i take asdas own make sleeping tablets, if your asdas have a pharmacy like mine does then you can purchase them over the counter otherwise try herbal nightol as its all natural sedatives in them they work for a few nights then i find my body gets used to taking them so i have to move on to something else, also just a little tip my friend takes child medised its about £4.99 a bottle it works for her best of luck"

bluebadger replied: "Sounds to me like you need a good hot bath, with some added lavender oil added to the water. Have a good hot drink of milk, with horlicks or ovaltine and a little sugar. Add a few drops of lavender oil to your pillow. Nite nite, god bless. See you in the morning."

How long doest alcohol and generic over the counter sleep aid stay in the system? How long doest alcohol and generic over the counter sleep aid stay in the system? I got a call today and I have to go to a place of employment for a drug screen. I drank about three drinks last night all with maybe 2 shots of Everclear in them, and went to bed around 1:30am. I have to take 2 sleep aids at night to get myself to rest. I am awake now at 12:15p. I feel absolutely normal and ready to go! Should I have anything to worry over about the drug test?

Ari_Kai_Rai replied: "As long as you have not taken any illegal drugs, the stuff you drank should stay with you for 48 hours, because that is how long your liver will filtered it out of your blood. And since you didn't take anything illegal, you should worry about failing the drug test."

im here replied: "Those are both legal substances. Why are you worried?"

How long does it take for Unisom sleep aid to leave your system? A couple of nights ago I took three Unisom sleep aid tablets, but the directions said to take just one. I didn't think one would be enough and it was my first time taking Unisom. For the past two days I have been sleeping for 14 hours each night and feeling a little drowsy throughout the day. How long should it be until I am regular again and not so tired? I took it on 5/5/09

Ali replied: "By now you should be fine. You are lucky you didn't OD"

How do I convince the doctor that I need a benzodiazepine for sleep aid? I know that the most common sleep aids prescribed are the non-narcotic sleep aids such as Ambien and Lunesta due to their decreased Habit forming characteristics but I would prefer the other type of sleep aid. I am a collage student so my previous doctors thought that I was just looking for a good recreational drug but really want it or need it :) If anyone has information regarding the different classes of sleep aid and their reasons for prescription please ANSWER!! Thank you very much :)

Jake W replied: "Stay up for 2 days, your eyes will be bloodshot. Then visit the doctor :)"

niftybruce replied: "It's much more difficult to get a benzodiazepine for sleep because, as you mentioned, there are other non-habit forming drugs on the market. Additionally, benzodiazepines work differently than Lunesta/Ambien and can actually worsen the quality of your sleep by delaying or interrupting REM sleep. If Ambien/Lunesta/etc aren't doing it for you, there are other classes of drugs that can be tried: SSRI-type drugss (mirtazapine, trazodone); histamine blockers (Benadryl, doxylamine succinate). If you're really bent on getting a benzodiazepine, the ones most indicated as sleep aids are temazepam (Restoril) and triazolam (Halcion). But like I said, there are many other options you should try first before resorting to a benzodiazepine. Best of luck...and the more you try to convince the physician into a specific medication, the more likely he/she will not want to prescribe it."

Does the sleep aid melatonin lessen or increase panic attacks? When having nighttime panic attacks, would taking the sleep aid melatonin be a quick fix?

Ali replied: "According to my psychology book this is a temporary problem...how long has this been occuring? Im not really sure if melatonin would fix this...it may help a little bit."

amanda replied: "I am not a professional. I have used meletonin frequently and it has started making me feel as if my heart were skipping beats.....or just a wierd feeling. I bet it will be okay to fix the situation if used rarely."

mr p m o s h replied: "Heck no do not take that stuff !!! in my case I only tried like three nights taking melatonin and I felt sleepy all day. I wont take that stuff again ever. it really messes up your sleep.."

Az R replied: "Nope. Probably would not have any effect, it's really not that sort of medication. Recurrent night time panic attacks should be looked into. They can be a sign of neurological problems, stress, psychiatric problems, all sorts of things. Depending on the cause an nature of them your doctor should be able to work through and find a solution for you - though you may need a referral to a sleep specialist."

Can you take Melatonin with another sleep aid? I have a hard time sleeping when I have another person in my bed. I want to try Melatonin and see if that works. I was wondering how you use it, what dose to try and if it is wise to use it with another sleep drug (OTC sleep aid). Also any other sleep tips you can provide would be great. Thanks!

misspriss070807 replied: "i am sure you can because melatonin is a natural substance. you could call your local pharmecy and ask."

marina replied: "i bought natrol melatonin 5 mg from walmart. take 1 tablet 20 min before u ready to sleep. dont take other otc medications with it. tried other brands, didnt work as good as this one. hope it helps u"

my dr prescribed me seroquel for a sleep aid but after researching it im scared to take it is it a good sleep? is it usually used as a sleep aid as well as a antipychotic med? is this normal?

mommyto2 replied: "yeah, seroquel is often used as a sleep aid because of how sedating it is, but that doesn't mean that a person with no psychological problems should be taking it JUST for sleep. It's usually used to treat schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. I would do your research, and then set up another appointment to talk about this with your Dr and express your concerns."

Hopefully Helpful replied: "I am also taking Seroquel to help me sleep. It works for me. Even though it is an anti-psychotic doctors do prescribe it as a sleep aid. Give it a try. I think you will find it helpful. I hope you have pleasant dreams. Good Luck."

Gothic Tears replied: "Usually, Seroquel is prescribed for Bi Polar Disorder/Depression (severe mood swings/antipsychotic). My best friend takes it for Bi Polar Disorder. However, she did tell me that it makes her sleep really well, so she takes it before bed."

C C C replied: "Please do not start on this cycle of medication for something as natural as sleep. If you cannot sleep it shows that you have an anxiety or depression. Sleeping pills will not cure the root cause of the problem only put a mask over it. You may have depression, it is the fastest growing disability worldwide! You should really read this about medication for depression, suicidal thought and self harm. It is about what doctors do not tell you. I have never seen just a good information on depression and self harm cutting and why you must be careful of medication"

ozpy3 replied: "There isn't much in the way of sleeping tablets that isn't addictive and dangerous. Seroquel is safer and more effective over a period of time taking it. Try it and complain if it causes a problem, it might help with your anxiety too."

shaneris5 replied: "I strongly urge you to see: MORE SKULLDUGGERY! - DRUG CO BURIES UNFAVOURABLE DRUG STUDIES about Seroquel, and MEDICATIONS - SHOULD NEUROLEPTICS USE BE RESTRICTED? in section 1, at and Print the former, and give to your doctor. Check out medications at: & & & & Exercise, but not within 2 hours of bedtime. Have a warm bath, or shower, an hour before bedtime, then a glass of warm milk, possibly with Horlicks, or one of the herbal teas, below, and use dimmer lighting. Put your mind in a position where it wants to shut itself off, and sleep. See insomnia treatments, in much more detail than can be included here, in section 3, at ezy build, below. Use one of the relaxation methods, in bed, after lights out, in sections 11, 2, 2.c, or 2.i, but they can take some time to master, (Progressive Muscular Relaxation excepted) so learn and become proficient in their use during the day. An alternative is to use the EFT, in section 53, saying to yourself: "Even though I sometimes have a sleep disorder, I deeply and completely accept myself." (or choose your own wording) while you use the acupressure tapping. Some more; quick, and easy to learn, are at The progressive muscle relaxation, (most easily learned) guided imagery, and mindfulness breathing are known to be effective. Find out which works best for you, in the daylight hours, so you will be prepared, come bedtime. For many people, a good idea is to develop a set "wind down" routine for the last hour before bedtime, so your subconscious mind learns that it is time to put thinking aside, and prepare for mindfulness, (awareness, without cogitation/purposeful thought) or the EFT, in preparation for sleep, but the idea with mindfulness is to not even think about sleeping: just drift off, naturally, during exercising those techniques. Avoid TV, computer, or anything exciting in this hour, although reading a BORING! book is a good idea. I suggest that you try using the EMDR variant, in section 3, on page A, prior to the mindfulness, or the progressive muscular relaxation, but after the EFT, if that method is chosen. Experiment, to find which combination works best for you. I also use it prior to my chosen relaxation technique, after lights out, at night. Get strong light, preferably sunlight (even if overcast) soon after waking in the morning, to reset your circadian rhythm. Your bedroom should very dark, after lights out, and a good sleeping temperature is 70 F, or 19 C. No daytime napping. Have a cup of chamomile herbal tea, an hour before bedtime, and employ many of the techniques in section 3."

Katie replied: "I took seroquel in the hospital for like a week, I slept.. but I would wake up in the middle of the night with almost like a drunk feeling, I didn't like it at all, I prefer trazadone"

HeatherCHRH replied: "Don't be afraid. Seroquel is often used off label as a sleep aid. I have been on it as a sleep aid and mood stabilizer for a year, I love it (300 mg). In the beginning I was afraid as well because of what I found on the internet. The side effects I have experienced are weight gain and sensitivity to alcohol. The weight gain can be combated with a sensible diet. It is advisable that you do not drink alcohol while on Seroquel because it makes you more sensitive to the effects of the alcohol."

Deb67 replied: "be careful taking seroquel it has really bad side effects, my daughter was put on it and she just about flipped out and became very angry and agressive while on it and no after being off it she is fine"

Mama replied: "yes its normal. it helps those with mental illness relax, not cure them. it has a sedating effect so you can sleep."

EarthGirlwantzPeace replied: "I didn't have a prescription, but i got one form my BF's mom who is really psychotic..ok I took only ONE and this is what happened to me.. My lil sister was reading me a book for school and i was sewing something.. well i fell over in my bed and started snoring like 20 Min's after taking it.. and i couldn't be roused.. It was a GREAT sleep! I just fell over and like a ton of bricks.. well those were the days.. long ago when taking pills was cool.. but ya the sleep was really good."

YA Junkie replied: "I was taking klonopin for sleep and anxiety. My new psychiatrist switched me to seroquel because it is not as addicting as klonopin. However, I had a terrible experience with seroquel. The first month was ok, but the 2nd month was a nightmare. My hips became very stiff and I had trouble just walking (and I do stretching and yoga almost everyday). Then my feet and ankles swelled up (edema). After 2 months on seroquel, I put on 20 pounds. Obviously, I stopped seroquel at that point. Seroquel is an antipsychotic. After my experience, I don't think it should be used just because someone needs a sleep aid. If natural remedies don't help, there are over the counter meds like benadryl or sominex. If you need prescription sleep aids, there are lots of other meds better than seroquel. Some of them are mainly used for depression of anxiety, but can also be efffective sleep aids."

Besides a sleeping aid, how can I get to sleep tonigh after eating chocolate? The caffeine in chocolate keeps me up, and I think that´s why I cannot sleep. I don´t have a sleeping aid, and have class in the morning and have to get up in 6 hours. Help!

DrJelly replied: "Sit away from your bed/bedroom if you're restless in bed. Try reading a book (non work related), or listening to relaxing music. As soon as you feel sleepy, get into bed. Lying awake in bed just aggravates things. And no2, don't eat chocolate before bed!!! Bonne nuit hopefully!"

What's the best OTC sleep aid to help me sleep on a plane? I have an 18 hour flight to China in about 4 days and I wanted to sleep on the plane to pass the time and help with jet lag. I have a hard time getting to sleep on planes; so I was wondering what a good over the counter sleep aid would be? I've taken DIphenhydramine HCL, and it hasn't seemed to really work at all. Thanks!

LostGirl917 replied: "Tylenol PM or Advil PM"

Brad R replied: "nyquil (w/ alcohol of course)! drink the bottle!"

kins80 replied: "Alcohol. Depending on which airline you fly, it iwll be free even in economy."

Suzie s replied: "Valium."

TN2Vegas replied: "I always take 1 Tylenol PM about an hr before take off and if it's a long flight...like yours.....I would take 2"

Sausage Mahoney replied: "bourbon"

yummycashews replied: "Benadryl, Tylenol PM, drowsy Dramamine. Just be sure not to drink!"

Pimpin John replied: "Valium is tried and true, but not OTC. If you have decent insurance, prescription meds are sometimes actually cheaper, and docs will hand you a Valium script for a hangnail these days."

childhoodcancercure replied: "Try Valerian root it is herbal and relaxes you. It's also good for stress headaches. You can also get a Melatonin supplement too. I use both together about 30 minutes before bed to relax when I can't sleep. I should also say that the Valerian does have a bad odor but doesn't leave after taste. It will also make your cat go crazy like catnip, lol. My cat runs to the bathroom cabinet when he hears me get the bottle out of there."

sherinne replied: "Try not sleeping a day before the flight so you'r really tired, then sleep half way during the flight...listen to some calm music or any music that you like too.If your ears pop when the plane goes down, the best thing to do is to be sleeping,i was sleeping once when the plane was going down and i woke up and i didn't feel a thing!"

Ron B replied: "drink some scotch. not joking."

barthebear replied: "diphenhydramine is what most otc sleep rxs are Benedryl! think Nytol was good but its hard to find. Some of the others dont work as well even though the active ingredients are the same"

kiwibarb11 replied: "diphenhydramine is benadryl- and a normal theraputic dose is 50 mgs. You may just need to take more than the box specifies. Drink lots of water, lay off the alcohol even if it is free, and use a saline spray in the nose and eyes to help protect your mucus membranes. If you are over 40 you might want to take an aspirin before boarding to help prevent blood clots in your legs. Exercise as much as you can between sleeps for the same reason. enjoy yourself!"

skyman345 replied: "12 double whiskies 11 vodka shots 10 warming brandy 9 bottles of guiness 8 champagne cocktails 7 chablais white wines 6 carling black lables 5 carlsberg tins 4 merlot reds 3 babychams 2 bloody marys 1 large baileys to make you puke! If you aint knocked out by that the try asprin for elephant!!!!"

houghchrst@sbcglobal.net replied: "Valerian root is the best natural way to go. Just about take off time. No crappy side effects either."

it's a BOY! due 6/30/08 replied: "Unisom or Tylenol PM if you need the pain relief as well."

luvalot76 replied: "Tylenol PM will put you rite out quickly"

kaliluna replied: "I use a homeopathic one called Calms Forte. It is nonaddicting and it doesn't knock you out. I love it because it helps me sleep throughout the night and it doesn't make me feel weird when I wake up in the morning. You can find it at most drugstores with the sleepaid stuff."

jackie replied: "Tylenol P.M."

Hunter replied: "Valerain is a natural sleep aid and is sold over the counter in the herbal section of most drugstores. you can get more info on this web site: you can also try aleve pm or tylenol pm."

dannyanita12 replied: "tylenol pm if you also have pain but if not there is something called simply sleep. that works really well. start out with just have the recommended amount and if that doesn't work take the recommended amount. have a good night!!!"

Fergus replied: "Benadryl (diphenhydramine) Take 4-6 capsules at bedtime and you will sleep fine."
